Iran to host intl. confab on groundwater management

TEHRAN, Jun. 12 (MNA) – Iranian authorities along with Iranian and foreign experts gather in Tehran on Sunday to discuss groundwater management and the strategy for coping with droughts.

Experts from the Asian G-WADI Network (Water and Development Information for Arid Lands A Global Network) and the International Drought Initiative will discuss recent advances in groundwater management and innovative strategies for coping with droughts during a one-day international conference at the Ministry of Energy in Tehran on Sunday 14 June 2015.

The sustainable use of fresh water is integral to the maintenance of human security. Yet, while drought has become more frequent, groundwater is either becoming increasingly scarce or of an inferior quality.

Alarmed by human-induced water scarcity and degradation, UNESCO and the Regional Centre on Urban Water Management have arranged a high-level conference centering on today’s rapidly shifting water context.

The Iranian Deputy Minister of Energy Sattar Mahmoudi, Deputy Minister of Energy for Water and Wastewater Affairs Rahim Meydani, Deputy Minister of Energy for Planning and Economic Affairs Alireza Daemi, senior decision makers at the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad, managers of provincial water authorities and scholars from different universities will join the discussions.

International experts from the University of California, the University of Newcastle and other imminent academic institutions will also contribute. Coming from Afghanistan, India, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, S. Korea, Tajikistan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States, the conference will bring together a wide spectrum of technical experience from across the region and globally.
